This past Sunday, January 15th the AmeriCorps team decided to join the movement across the country and hold a Sunday Night Supper to honor Martin Luther King Jr. and get Seward thinking about one of MLK's famous quotes: "the most persistent and urgent question is what are you doing for others?" To do this, we invited community organizations from around Seward to speak at our event and recruit volunteers. We advertised our event to the public with posters around town and with an ad on Seward City News. We had about 30 people interested in volunteering show up and representatives from about 10 organizations made short presentations to the group. How did we get people to come to our event?!? We offered them an irresistible make-you-own pizza bar! We precooked about 40 handmade personal pizzas the night before and set out TONS of toppings. Special thanks to Cindy, Jonathan, Minna, and Moorea for helping us in the kitchen and streamlining the pizza assembly line!! The night went great, community members shared a meal with each other and had conversations about service opportunities and signed up to volunteer. After dinner, we showed the movie "Pay it Forward," served popcorn, and encouraged everyone who had a day off on MLK day to make it a day on and volunteer!
