Want to join AmeriCorps?! Here's how!

Interested in serving with AmeriCorps?                                                                  A Program of the Corporation for National Community Service                                                                                                                                     Your World. Your Chance To Make It Better.

What is AmeriCorps?
AmeriCorps has personally given me growth both professionally and personally. It gives the opportunity to make a difference in your life and the lives of others in a community. Each year, AmeriCorps offers opportunities for adults of all ages and backgrounds to serve through a network of partnerships with local and national nonprofit groups. Through AmeriCorps, you can make a community safer, give a child a second chance, or help protect the environment. AmeriCorps members address critical needs in communities across the nation.

AmeriCorps is a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service. It is an independent federal agency whose mission is to improve lives, strengthen communities, and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. AmeriCorps also administers Senior Corps and Learn and Serve America. Together, these programs engage more than 2 million Americans in service each year.

As an AmeriCorps member you can:
  • Tutor and mentor disadvantaged youth
  • Fight illiteracy
  • Improve health service
  • Build affordable housing
  • Teach computer skills
  • Clean parks and streams
  • Manage or operate after-school programs
  • Help communities respond to disasters
  • Build organizational capacity
What are the benefits of AmeriCorps?

As a member, I have gained new skills and experiences. You also find satisfaction that comes from helping others in your community. Members who complete their service also earn a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award. This award can be used to pay for college, graduate school, or to pay back qualified student loans. Some AmeriCorps also receive a modest living allowance during their term of service, which here at the Alaska SeaLife Center we do receive.

Are there different programs in AmeriCorps?
Yes! There are three main programs that include: AmeriCorps State and National, AmeriCorps VISTA, and AmeriCorps NCCC (National Civilian Community Corps).
  • AmeriCorps State and National: The Alaska SeaLife Center AmeriCorps falls under this program. State and National supports a broad range of local service programs that engage thousands of Americans in service to meet critical community needs.
  • AmeriCorps VISTA: AmeriCorps VISTA provides full-time members to community organizations and public agencies to create and expand programs that build capacity and ultimately bring low-income individuals and communities out of poverty.
  • AmeriCorps NCCC:  This program is a full-time residential program for men and women from ages 18-24 that strengthen communities while developing leaders through direct, team-based and community service.
